We envision a revitalized campus environment that reflects our commitment to excellence and provides an inviting atmosphere for all. As a part of our Love Our Campus Day, we have identified several key projects aimed at transforming our campus into a more vibrant, appealing, and functional space. Our primary focus is on enhancing the campus’s visual appeal by rejuvenating its key architectural elements. One major project in this regard involves the exterior gates, which we intend to transform through a fresh coat of pristine white paint. This initiative aims to not only uplift the overall aesthetic of the entrance but also leave a lasting positive impression on visitors, students, and faculty members alike. In addition, we are dedicated to painting the pillars beneath our library, with four pillars remaining. Recognizing that a clean and well-maintained environment directly influences the overall campus experience, our project scope extends beyond aesthetics. We are committed to a thorough campus clean-up initiative that encompasses litter removal, landscaping enhancement, small repairs and general upkeep. This approach to cleanliness aligns with our goal of providing a serene and organized campus that fosters an optimal learning and working atmosphere. Our overarching mission is to create an environment that resonates with pride, collaboration, and excellence. By pursuing these projects with diligence, we aim to establish a campus that not only reflects our values but also elevates the overall quality of life for all members of our community. Through these combined efforts, we envision a campus that not only meets the needs of today but also paves the way for a brighter and more prosperous future.

For our Love Our Schools Day we would love to give our classrooms a refresh by painting one accent wall, replacing ceiling tiles that are cracked, as well as painting some common areas in our hallways. Our primary focus is on enhancing the campus’s visual appeal in the hallways, classrooms, and ceilings. We need to paint and refresh some of our old cabinets in our classrooms. Additionally, we would like to paint and clean up our soon-to-be sensory room so that it is ready for our its materials. We also have some open concrete space outside our special education classrooms that we want to paint some sensory walks on.  We have a few areas around our campus that need an organizational overhaul cleanup. Our two supply rooms, under our stage, as well as our math, science, and bookrooms need cleaning up and reorganization. Our staff bathrooms in the main school building are in need of a lot of attention with look and some plumbing upgrades.  This is going to be a pretty big job with a lot of painting to clean up the overall look of our school and classrooms, and our students are going to love and appreciate all of it. Our school was built in the 70’s, so the majority of our classrooms do not have windows. An accent wall and newly painted cabinets will help allow some warmth and pop to our classrooms.  We are very excited to work hard and make this day a huge success for our students and community!

Haley Elementary – Garden Project – Chandler

Haley Elementary School

Click Title or Image to Learn More and Share Project

District: Chandler Unified School District

Address: 3401 S Layton Lakes Blvd Chandler, AZ 85249

We, at Haley Elementary School, are excited for this opportunity to share our mission for a Haley Learning Garden to further contribute to our rich history of learning and growing together at Haley. Chandler, Arizona is a remarkably diverse community offering a wide range of support for this project including a continually active PTO, great volunteers, and supportive parents to come alongside students and staff as nutritional education is ongoing at Haley Elementary. Our goal is to create a real-world example that contributes to a sustainable lifestyle through healthy food growing on our campus and a positive impact on our community at large. All grade levels will be involved from PreK-6th grade, and we are looking forward to launching the Haley Learning Garden! We would ideally like 5-8 garden boxes with soil. Our Haley Garden benefits our whole school and community. Children will learn how their favorite vegetables grow and where they come from. They will discover their “green thumbs” as they watch plants grow to their full potential. Our garden will help families eat a healthier diet as students share what they learn. We cannot wait to have students ask more questions about botany, dig in the dirt to support their healthy immune systems, and get excited about sharing what they experience. Our garden will have a special additional meaning and remembrance to our school. Haley Elementary is named after a very special student who left this world after a lengthy battle with cancer in 2005. The impact of her legacy lives on today through a Crisis Fund assisting families with students fighting life-altering illnesses or injuries. Haley Knutsen is not only remembered for her courage facing great adversity but her inquisitive nature, love of learning, and compassion for others. Haley loved butterflies and ladybugs and they will be provided for the plants that encourage their residence in the garden, along with worms, of course! Here at Haley, we have many teachers, students, and volunteers that are lifelong learners. Engaging our school community in maintaining our Haley Learning Garden will develop self-confidence, reasoning, discovery, cooperation, and creativity. We will invite our families and students to help plan and design the garden along with planting the many flowers and vegetables that attract the beautiful butterflies and ladybugs our namesake, Haley Knutsen loved learning about. We will also create an After-School Garden Club available for all grade levels to participate. Students will have the opportunity to connect with nutrition education and understand the process of growing and maintaining healthy vegetables and flowers. Each grade will have a time during the school year where they take an active role in our school garden to ensure they are working together to problem solve making sure our garden reaches its fullest potential. Students with disabilities and special needs will also have an active role helping to maintain our garden by watering, planting, and working with adult leaders to help them focus, follow directions, and apply self-management skills. Another aspect of maintaining our garden would be to organize community members, teachers, and students to be actively involved in watering the garden, digging, mulching, picking flowers and vegetables, and protecting the plants. We will keep our community informed about our school garden by taking photos, sending information about the plants and veggies we’re growing, which can include fun recipe ideas for families to enjoy lifelong learning at home. Our entire Haley school community will benefit from a real world understanding of nutrition. This is a great time for students to shift from a traditional classroom setting to an outdoor learning experience that will focus on student engagement and critical thinking skills. Students at Haley will understand the process of growing healthy foods and can integrate many subjects like math, science, literacy, and social emotional learning. Students will learn to love nature and that the outdoor environment is a safe and enjoyable place to learn. We are committed to a continued effort to build, sustain, and maintain our Haley Learning Garden. Our commitment to outdoor learning will be tied through our curriculum and will include many different learning objectives from each grade level. They start in Pre-K though 2nd primary grade where students will be introduced to life cycles, plants, and learning to take care of their environment by compost, reuse, and recycling. This requires students to use fine motor skills, build relationships by working together with peers, and learning to care for something beyond themselves. Our students in grades 3rd- 6th will make academic connections by using math and science standards to care for the garden and the insects that will call their garden home. All will responsibly care for our garden, each having a job that must be completed to sustain our natural learning environment. Garden-based education provides all students at Haley Elementary with a hands-on learning experience that will be enjoyed for the many generations ahead. Let’s do this!

We are a 5-8 school in the Madison School District with 66% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.  Our students are in need of equipment for recess.  We have a brand new building/campus that is currently in phase 2 of construction.  We currently have one field and two shaded cemented areas with tables for students to play and gather.  The other parts of campus like basketball courts, gymnasium and other play areas are still under construction.  A recess equipment drive of board games, cards, and sports equipment of basketballs, volleyballs, footballs, portable volleyball poles and net and a portable basketball hoop would really enhance their school experience.  Board games and uno cards are also very helpful for heat advisory days.

Vista Peak School -Task Box Library – Deer Valley

Vista Peak School

Click Title or Image to Learn More and Share Project

District: Deer Valley Unified School District

Address: 19825 N. 15th Ave

A task box is a container, box, folder, or other self-contained system that holds all the necessary materials to teach a child a particular task of skill.  These are skills that the student can do independently or with minimal support that develop routine and order through effective practice.  With students with disabilities, task boxes provide visual cues and sensory input that further supports learning whilst building learner confidence as they are able to efficiently make progress on the given task. Vista Peak School is our public day school for students with more significant learning needs and disabilities. It is also our special education hub serving the entire district as a central location to house a variety of special education resources and models of exceptional instruction for students with disabilities. We are in need of volunteers to put together task boxes that will be used not only at Vista Peak School but around the entire district.  We are looking to build a task box library that could be used for district teachers to checkout resources for their own classrooms. This library will also include file folder games, daily schedule and goal cards, fidgets, sensory tools, and classroom brain boxes.  While some pieces of items can be made from elements found in any kitchen, other pieces have a financial investment. To that end, we also need some financial support to be able to purchase the materials needed for these boxes. The intent of this library is to serve students with disabilities across all 42 schools in the district. We will provide models as examples of what might go into each task box, and we will provide direction on how these boxes are used. If financial support is provided, we can take care of all the necessary ordering. Below is also some ideas that could be donated to help support the building of our task box library.

  • Cardboard Trays (from canned goods-grocery stores), shoe boxes, egg carton, amazon boxes
  • Plastic containers of various sizes: butter or margarine tubs, deli tubs, baby food or snack cup containers, Dannon yogurt tubs, DVD cases, prescription pill containers (please wash them thoroughly to remove traces of meds), Gladware containers, parmesan cheese containers, sour cream containers, dixie cups, plastic takeout containers, clear plastic bottles, pencil boxes etc.
  • Pictures: print pictures of TV characters, toys, school supplies, clothing, etc. (images in color)
  • Small objects and manipulatives such as plastic animals, characters, toys, blocks, Legos, cars, puzzle pieces, beads, laces, pencils, erasers, poker chips, unifix cubes, colored paper clips, nuts and bolts, plastic shapes, scrabble tiles, magnetic letters/numbers, marbles, etc.
  • Craft supplies such as: colored paper, tape, glue, stapler, scissor, Velcro, paperclips, magnetic tape, spring clothespins, crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue gun and glue sticks, cardboard, pipe cleaners, craft sticks, foam egg carton, etc.
  • School & Office supplies: lined paper, binder, dividers, notebook, calendar/agenda, newspaper grocery ads, maps, file folders, tag/poster board (heavy weight cardstock paper works, too!), post-it notes, ruler, highlighter, books, workbooks, page protector, dry erase markers, dry erase board, etc.

Gavilan Peak School – Firebird Pride – Deer Valley

Gavilan Peak School

Address: 2701 West Memorial Drive

Gavilan Peak Elementary may be a small school, but we have big pride in our students, staff, and community. After the pandemic, we remain understaffed in our maintenance and custodial departments, so our beloved campus now needs a makeover. For us, a little help will go a long way. Studies show that an appealing and engaging environment can positively impact children’s mood and motivation, leading to better focus, behavior, and academic performance. We are proposing some small projects that will coincide with an initiative for homeroom classes to personalize and beautify their shared quads:

  • Several steel-framed picnic tables encircle the campus. Relocating them onto concrete, rather than on the grass or dirt where they currently sit, would be helpful.
  • The playgrounds could use raking to remove debris and refresh the sand and woodchips.
  • Our center quad world mural and character adjectives need some touch-up painting.
  • Finally, we would like to provide a planter/pot (large, such as 15 inches) outside each classroom that classes can decorate or plant according to a theme or subject taught.

In addition to all of the positive learning impacts we know come from a beautiful setting, we hope that these projects, once completed, will inspire our staff and students to further beautify and care for their shared spaces to reflect the image we want for Gavilan Peak and promote a stronger connection to the school. Can you help our school once again shine with Firebird pride?

Hello, Thank you for even considering our project. We are in need of artificial turf in two of our quad areas. Currently, there is natural grass, well some grass, but mostly mud. Due to how our school was built there is never going to be enough sun to grow healthy grass for student usage. Year after year, we spend money and use natural resources to water, fertilize, and grow grass, but it always ends up the same. Our student cannot walk on most of it due to it being muddy all of the time. Our campus has 103 years of strong tradition and it always is hard to work with when you host community events, like last weekend, and have to set up local businesses in the mud. If you would like more information or need pictures, please let us know and we would love to schedule a tour of our campus for you.   Joe Kinney Principal

We have a lot of little things that would go a long way if we could work together to get them fixed/restored/updated. We are open to ideas or for someone to look at the projects but we have some suggestions from our staff to get the ball rolling: We need a much bigger bike rack. We currently have one, but it only holds a dozen bikes. We either need to expand it or create another one. We have a pergola and two wooden benches that were made during a previous Love Our Schools effort. They could really use a fresh stain or be sanded and painted. They are really difficult to use right now and some kids have gotten splinters from them. The outside of our school was repainted this summer. Our poles that hold up the awning around our building are a huge hazard – the kids crash into them because they blend in. We were thinking we could paint them halfway up with our school blue color to avoid accidents. The photo I uploaded shows the poles along the front of the school – they are thin and metal. Our basketball court needs some TLC. We need new hoops and the lines need to be repainted. Our sandpit for our long jump really needs to be raked and revived – it takes a few people and some muscles! We have a painted yellow line in the middle of our outside walkways so students follow along on the line and stay on the path. We would actually love to make it a two-lane highway as we have so many students and sometimes the lines crash!
